Tales from the Archives - 46

Is Friday’s Hill the Most Haunted Road in Fernhurst?

There are many tales of ghostly figures carrying trays, throwing stones or sitting by the roadside weeping. Nigel Headland contributes a tale of his own.

Several teenagers from Fernhurst, including the 16 year old Nigel, used to cycle in to Haslemere to attend ballroom dancing classes. One night Nigel arrived at the class to find that he was the only one from the village probably because it was a dark, wet night. As he rode home after the class through Kingsley Green the air became clammy and the darkness seemed more dense, just the conditions to make you fearful about ghosts. As he approached the top of Friday’s Hill, pedalling like mad and bent down over the handlebars for maximum speed, the bike seemed to literally fly down the hill. Suddenly there was a terrible high-pitched screaming noise and he felt himself being seized from behind and rapidly halted. There was a very loud bang and he found himself thrown in a heap on the side of the road.

Was he attacked by a supernatural force? Er, no. His raincoat had caught in the back wheel round the dynamo and jammed the wheel solid. The screaming was the tyre skidding and wearing through and the bang was the inner tube bursting!
