Party Like It’s 1928

In 1928 the Fernhurst Working Men’s Club had one of its brightest and happiest gatherings. Such was the interest in the event that when it became clear that between 200 and 300 members and guests would be attending the venue had to be quickly moved over the road to the Village Hall, and even that was filled to capacity.

Maj Gen Sir John Daniel, President of the Club, welcomed the guests in a bright and happy speech and outlined the programme for the evening’s entertainment. This consisted of a concert followed by dancing and whist. The Misses Dudman took the audience by storm with a lively Scottish Reel and a very neatly executed Sword Dance and other items included violin solos, bagpipes, rollicking stories and duets.

Then it was time for the younger members of the audience to get up dance, while the older folk watched on or played whist. Refreshments were served by members of the club and their wives and Mr James Cole the Secretary was commended for his excellent organisation of the event.
